Location: Yilan
Project: Public Art Installation Program of Yilan Li Ke Yong Memorial Library
Year: 2023
Category: Public Art/Competition
Status: Second Place

- The competition asked participants to identify an “undefined space” around the library and come up with a design that does not interfere with the circulation, revitalizes the site and responds to the spirit of the library. -

We chose a corner that is currently used for temporary parking. This seemingly useless corner is the meeting point of three roads and the entrance route. Through the design, we hope to turn this neglected place into a node for gathering, action and reading.

The installation continues the library‘s spirit of preservation and collection, starting from the material vocabulary of the library itself and the plaza’s floor, and reconstructing the texture of the red bricks and floor tiles into the structural language of the work, which formally echoes with the building. In order to preserve the unique plant specimens of Yilan, we tested a variety of pouring methods and materials, and finally chose platinum resin to ensure light transmission, structural stability, and outdoor weather resistance.

When the sun shines, the branches and leaves can be seen; at night, light and shadows ripple like water, allowing the library‘s corner to be naturally illuminated. The work is called “File”, a juxtaposition of nature and culture, and an act of reading in space.
